China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), the contractor handling Lagos-Ibadan Standard Gauge Railway Project, has been mandated to employ Nigerian engineers to understudy railway engineering.
Minister of Transportation, Mr. Chibuike Amaechi, gave the order during the routine inspection on the ongoing project site on Thursday, and expressed dismay at the refusal of the company to fulfill the agreement.
“I’m giving you till this weekend to employ six Nigerian engineers,” Amaechi ordered the management of CCECC.
He said that two engineers have to be supplied between Ministry of Transportation and the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), while two engineers with civil engineering knowledge have to be provided by CCECC; “and TEAM will provide the other two, making six indigenous engineers on the project.”
Amaechi regretted that CCECC has not employed indigenous engineers for the purpose, in spite of his previous directives to them.
The transportation minister recollected that he had sometime around July told the management of CCECC to employ Nigerian engineers to understudy the work that is being done on the rail project.
