Governor Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai of Kaduna State, on Saturday said, “prior to the reforms, Kaduna state had the highest number of Districts Heads in the world with 390 District Heads.”
The governor stated this at an Interactive session with Pastors from across the state held in Kaduna.
According to him, “it is a heavy burden on local government councils with many local government areas having backlogs of salaries for 10 months.
el-Rufai said, “currently Kaduna State has the most functioning local government councils in Nigeria and this is the result of fundamental reforms they have carried out to reposition them to serve the people.
Governor el-Rufai, who was responding to questions from the pastors, explained that his administration has taken the bold step to relieve the local government areas from excessive staff that are not needed, removed incompetent teachers and reduced the high number of traditional rulers.
Speaking further, “these reforms have made the local government areas solvent and able to execute capital projects.
“When we came into power in 2015, eight (8) local government areas could not pay salaries without receiving monthly support from the state government, making all the 23 local government areas money collection centres.
“As at today, there is no local government that doesn’t have more than N50m for projects after they settled all their salaries, while some even have above N200million,” he said.
The Interactive Session was attended by Pastors, Bishops, and Christian clerics from different denominations from across the states.
