Pension Deductions, Salary Shortfalls: UI Unions Serves VC Indefinite Strike Notice

Industrial unions at the University of Ibadan on has served the Institution’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Idowu Olayinka notice of an indefinite strike as from tomorrow March,10.
New Nigerian gathered that the looming strike by the unions was in protest over alleged illegal pension deductions and shortfall of salaries of the workers by the University.
The unions namely Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technicians (NAAT) at a Joint Action Congress asked the University’s authorities  “to address the issues or face indefinite strike action” on or before 10th March, 2017.
The unions in a letter addressed to the Vice-chancellor,Professor Idowu Olayinka signed by leadership of non-academic staff union Wale Akinremi (SSANU), Caleb Falaye (NAAT) and O.A Arojo (NASU)‎ respectively alerted the Vice Chancellor of the planned strike.
“Failure to implement all the items stated above by Friday 10th March, 2017 the Staff Unions in the University, arising from the warning strike earlier issued in August, 2016, will embark on an indefinite strike action” they said
The unions also asked the University Governing Council‎ to set-up a Committee comprising the 6 staff unions and students union to look into the Internally Generally Generated Revenue of the university and mode of expenditure.
They further urged the University authorities to constitute a staff committee comprising of the staff unions to undertake an independent staff audit exercise as well as asked the Governing Council to mandate the Vice-Chancellor to present to the Staff unions the budget, detailing the personnel cost and other capital/recurrent expendures as presented to Senate.
Sources at the joint congress, said the unions condemned “the parlous developments on the University campus”as well as declared “that pensions deductions hitherto is illegal and that the university ‎must be refunded since 2004”.
According to the sources, while ASUU is demanding payment of Postgraduate supervision allowances since 2011 and promotion arrears, the non-academic staff were demanding payment of promotion arrears and production of staff pay-slip up-to-date.
New Nigerian learnt that as at the time of sending this story,ASUU members are awaiting the approval of the national body of the union to proceed on the strike.
The Non academic staff were said to have resolved to proceed on an indefinite strike unless the issues are resolved favourably by 10th March, 2017
