Peace, Security: Govt urged To Involve Women

For progressive and sustainable development particularly in the Northern part of the country, government at all levels have been urged to make progress toward involving women in peace and security decision making.

Sen. Aisha Alhassan, Minister, for Women Affairs and Social Development gave the advice at the opening of two- day High Level Stakeholders Consultative Meeting  for the review of Adamawa peace architecture held in Yola.

According to her, the Federal Government has  re-affirmed its readiness to support and improve Women’s participation in peace and security decision making.

“The Programme was designed and supported by European Union and Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Governments of Adamawa, Gombe and Plateau to provide a conducive environment for the implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 in Nigeria.” Alhassan said.
She said that in line with the objective of the Programme, the ministry represent the aspiration of Nigerian women to actively participate in peace and security.
According to the Minister, the ministry and the participating states are working tireless to build  a strong alliances and strategies in the effort to improve the situation  of Nigeria women’s engagement in peace and security..
In his remarks, Governor Muhammadu Umar Jibrilla Bindow of Adamawa, said that the state government would continue to partner with all developmental partners aimed at promoting women’s engagement in peace and security in the northern Nigeria.
” It is quite timely that UN Women brought the Women Peace and Security Programme .

The state ministry of women affairs , in collaboration with women association ,religious and traditional institutions and other key stakeholders are working  closely  for  greater involvement of women in decision making process at all levels in the state.” Bindow said.
The governor, who was represented by the Chairman Adamawa state Planning Commission Engr. Arin  Lutu observed that no nation would make any meaningful progress if their women were left in isolation.

Mr. Peter Mancha, Deputy Programme manager of the project explained that the core objective of the meeting was to review the Adamawa peace architecture concerning involvement of women in peace and security decision and implementation.

Mancha said that four local government areas were selected in the state for the Programme

He listed the areas as Numan, Maiha, Mubi South and Yola North local government areas.
