Fresh industrial crisis looms in Oyo State as Labour unions in the state alerted that the state government has allegedly slashed the states’ workers salaries by 50percent.
The unions namely Trade Union Congress (T.U.C), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JPSNC) raised the alarm in a statement made available to journalists in Ibadan jointly signed by their secretaries, Comrade Iduozee Welsey (T.U.C), Comrade Badiru Mojeed
Adesina (NLC) and Comrade Dupe Adewoye
(JPSNC).
In the statement, the unions vowed that “the attempt to slash the workers salaries will not be tolerated by the labour movement in Oyo state”
According to the Labour unions, the slash of the Oyo state civil servants workers salaries by 50 percent with six months arrears was uncalled for and strongly condemned by the unions.
The unions maintained that the decision by the Oyo state government to slash its workers salaries by half was in “violation of the various memorandum of understanding (M.O.U) signed between the government and the labour unions” as there was never a time they “agreed to such decision”.
“The Trade Union Congress (T.U.C),Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JPSNC) Oyo State branch brings to the knowledge of the media and the public the recent unilateral decision of Oyo state government, through its official functionaries in different Ministries announcing to
workers in the state secretariat that the state has decided to be
paying 50% salaries to Oyo state workers henceforth and also
50% of six months salaries,”they said
The unions stated further that “let it be known that the labour movement in Oyo state did not at anytime agree to that position and will never compromise to such a ridicule”
“We demand that the state government call its official functionary to order so as to avert industrial crisis. While realizing that the government representatives are not acting alone, we called on Oyo state government to, as a matter of justice clear the outstanding six months salary arrears”
“We demand an immediate pronouncement by the state government to reverse the position of its decision .The Oyo State workers should disregard any statement/ agreement that is not part of existing M.O.U signed by labour and government of Oyo state. This development is in violation of all existing memorandum of understanding (M.O.U) between government and labour”
