Tragedy struck at Mokola area of Ibadan on Wednesday when a secondary school girl was crushed to death by a driver of one of the Oyo State-owned mass transit buses, otherwise known as the “Ajumose ” bus.
New Nigerian gathered that the bus also injured some other students said to be returning to their various homes at about 3pm after closing for the day.
It was learnt that few minutes after the bus crushed the secondary school girl to death, other students around the area descended on the drive and the bus as well during which the bus windscreen , side mirror , and parts of the bus were smashed while the drive was mercilessly beaten
Eye witness account said the driver was later rescued from the hands of the angry mob mostly the students by men of the Nigeria Police Force that later arrived the scene.
Speaking on the incident, Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adekunle Ajisebutu confirmed the accident, saying the driver is presently in police custody as he is recovering at the Police Hospital in Eleyele, Ibadan.
“The erring driver is in our custody. He has been taken to the Police Hospital, Eleyele for medical attention following attack on him by angry mob before the arrival of the police who eventually rescued him”he said.
SP Ajisebutu added that “,the corpse of the schoolgirl had been deposited at Alafia Hospital morgue for autopsy” while ” discreet investigation has commenced in earnest.”
