Contracts for the supply of spare parts for the repair and rehabilitation of locomotive engines have been awarded by Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).
Engr. Jerry Oche, Lagos Railway District Manager (RDM), disclosed the information recently.
The order for the spare parts became necessary as passengers of Lagos Mass Transit Train Service complained about frequent unscheduled movements of trains and regular breakdown of the few functional locomotive engines.
Oche said: “We have awarded contract for the supply of spare parts. As you know, spare parts are not what you can buy off shelf.”
He pointed out that orders have to be placed and their arrival awaited.
“Once the spare parts arrive, I can assure you that most of the engines awaiting repairs will be fixed and our services will be better,” the RDM stressed.
He stated that 457,000 passengers and 43 tons of luggage were carried during the period under review.
On Lagos-Kano passenger and goods train service, Oche pointed out that statistics made available shows that seven passenger trains worked in six months, while 3,092 passengers and 276 tons of goods were conveyed.
