The National Population Commission (NPC) headquarters Abuja was yesterday gutted by fire which affected some furniture items, including office equipment and personal effects.
A statement by the Director, Public Affairs of the commission, Simon Otene, said the fire incident which was sparked by a faulty air-conditioner, affected the training unit on the ground floor of the complex.
The statement said the technical staff of the Commission were undergoing in-house capacity building training when the incident occurred.
According to the statement, in the fire incident, no causality was recorded in the inferno as all the staff were effectively evacuated from the building through the quick intervention of the Fire Service Unit of the FCT.
While commending the quick response of the Fire Service in bringing the situation under control, the statement maintained that the operational capacity of the Commission to carry out its activities is not affected by the incident as it remains poised to pursue its constitutional mandate of providing demographic data for planning purposes.
