Discordant tunes are spewing in Minna, the Niger State capital over the purported release of the notorious armed robbery and kidnap kingpin, Saidu Isah Maiturare by the Police even as the Police in the state insisted that the high calibre criminal was still undergoing interrogations.
The Niger Police Command said the information about the release of the criminal was totally wrong and described it as dangerous, vicious rumours.
Maiturare, a 63 year celebrated criminal gang leader was arrested by the Police’s special squad from the Inspector General of Police office, (code named Operation Absolute Sanity) during a high wired undercover operation about two months ago.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Chief Supretindent of Police Moshood Jimoh had led the parade of the criminal and his band members at the Bosso Divisional Police Office in early March this year.
About two months after his arrest which made several bold headlines in the media owing to the calibre of the high profile criminal, his track records in criminalities, years in his absurd business in armed robbery, kidnapping for ransom and previous jail experiences, Maiturare is considered a big fish nabbed by the Police but yet to be taken to any court of law.
Two months after his arrest along with his son, the Police said it was yet to conclude investigations to prosecute him in any law court. This may have prompted the rumour of Maiturare’s release by the Police.
But the Police hastily denounced the report, describing it as a dangerous rumour and urged the citizenry to disregard what it said was a fake news.
From the grapevines, the rumour mill had been a washed that the suspect was seen in both Minna and at Paiko, his country home.
Maiturare until his arrest, was living big as one of the “untouchables” in his mansion at Mandela area. He owns several choice properties in the state capital and in Paiko where he hails from.
Not fewer than thirty three cars including exotic ones were seized from his Mandela home during the Police onslaught.
The suspect had told the Police that he had about three years earlier stopped kidnapping for ransom and was concentrating on receipt of stolen vehicles from his collaborators including transborder car jackers, armed robbers and other criminal gangs across the country.
Maiturare had even indicted the Police for receiving huge sums of money from him in the past to effect his release from jail in previous escapedes.
A jail bird, Maiturare has been imprisoned before but left off the hook on several occasions according to him.
The Comnmissioner of Police, Niger state Command, Paul Dibal Yakadi said in a statement issued by the Command’s image maker, ASP Abubakar Mohammed that Maiturare was still in the custody of the Police who are grilling him to extract more information about his criminal activities.
The statement urged members of the public to discountenance the fake information. It said the Police has “been working on” the suspect and his affinities.
It disclosed that additional stolen vehicles and other incriminating evidences have been recovered from the suspect and other members of his gang.
The statement also enlisted the confidence of members of the public and support the Police to do it’s constitutional responsibilities saying the Police was poised to do it’s job without let or favour to anyone.
