The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has concluded plan to mobilize heavy equipment to Bauchi and Gombe states, the hot bed of the Benue trough preparatory to oil exploration in the Gongola basin of the Trough expected to commence soon.
NNPC Group Managing Director, Dr. Maikanti Kachallah Baru told newsmen in Bauchi Friday during a visit to the state that citizens of the two states should not be panic when they see the movement of the equipment in their areas.
The Group Managing Director, who was received at the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport at his arrival to the state by the senior officials of the corporation and the Bauchi State Chief of Staff , Audu Sule Katagum, said his mission to the two states was to sensitize the people on the activities of oil exploration in the Benue Trough.
Dr. Maikanti Kachallah Baru said “We are here to signify our intention to sensitize the good people of Bauchi and Gombe states on our efforts to mobilize back into the Gongola Basin to resume oil exploration.
He further explained, “Our intention is to start 3D seismic acquisition and cover as much of the basin as possible, and to continue the work in terms of exploring hydrocarbon in the Northeast, of course our activities in the Chad Basin will also be re-activated as soon as we get the clear signs..
“So our mission here is to sensitize the people that if they see the seismic crew moving about in their farms and drilling some boreholes where we put our various geo polls and dropping seismic lines across the various areas, they shouldn’t  get distracted or scared”
“We come specifically just to lay various equipment and to take seismic data and that data will be evaluated and we will see as deep as possible below the surface as much as 10 to 15 kilometers below the ground”
On the prospects of getting oil in Bauchi and Gombe state, Baru said “the prospects is good because already some of the exploration that was done in one of the wells which was just outside Yankari Game Reserve, showed interesting find although not in commercial quantity.
According to him, the intent is to probe with more definitive seismic data to ensure that the search for hydro-carbon cover as much as possible.
