Staff of the National Institute  for Sports (NIS) under the auspices of Joint Research and Allied Institutions Sector Unions (JORAISU), on Monday joined their counterparts in research institutions in the country to embark on peaceful demonstration to press home their demand for the payment of 53.37 percent outstanding arrears.
The members, who carried placards in protest round the National Stadium, Lagos, said they have suffered untold hardship as a result of the non payment of the money which was approved since 2009.
They also said they were protesting the non establishment of a central body for research institutions in the country that would facilitate the smooth running  of the institutes.
Spokespersons of Academic Staff Union of Research Instititutes (ASURI),  Ken Omezi, Non Academic Staff Union (NASU), Comrade Kehinde Lawal and Senior Staff Association of Universities Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes and Associated Institutes (SSAUTHRIAI), representative
that made up JORAISU said emphantically that there is no going back on their indefinite strike action until the federal government looks into their plight.
“The government is so insensitive to the plight of research institutions in the country. Our leaderships have met with the Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Chief Audu Ogbe who promised to table our matter at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting but up till this moment not has been heard.
“It’s on record that other institutions of higher learning have been paid their 53.37 percent arrears, leaving out the research institutes which necessitated the strike and there will be no going back until our demands are met”, concluded the union leaders.
