Nigeria’s Democracy Under Threat – PDP

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members loyal to the Senator Ahmed Makarfi faction of the party have alerted that Nigeria democracy is now in danger over alleged plans by those it described as fifth columnists to turn Nigeria the to a one party country

The PDP faction raised the alarm in a four point communique read by Hon. Adedoja Ekolo, a former Ibadan South East council chairman after an emergency meeting
signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Akeem Oke

According to the party, any attempt to turn the country to a one party nation would be too dangerous to democratic principles and practice direction of the 1999 constitution,saying, “unless Nigerians look beyond what is happening within PDP, a major opposition party at the national level, the ship of the nation is heading to the rock”
The party stressed that there is the need for all and sundry in the country to sustain the nation’s growing democracy by not allowing it to be turn to a one party affairs.

On the prolonged factional crisis rocking the party, they maintained that “by this communique, we express our vote of confidence in the Makarfi-led Caretaker committee and we support and binds ourselves with all steps taken by Senator Makarfi and his caretaker committee, including but not limited to the pursuit of an appeal at the Supreme Court”.

The PDP Makarfi faction added that “over 80 per cent of PDP members in the whole of the federation are solidly behind Makarfi”.

The Interim Committee Chairman of the party, Honourable Muraina Ajibola in his welcome address entitled progress report/solidarity message briefed members of the faction on the report contained in Prof Jerry Gana’s Reformation of the PDP to the recent party’s zonal meeting in Ekiti and meetings of the forum of PDP State chairmen among others.

Hon Muraina however called for prayers as a way To end the leadership tussle rocking PDP as well as other problems confronting Nigeria presently adding “we badly need prayers now so that God’s uncommon favours shall see us through our party’s PDP crisis and indeed the crisis of hunger, want and economic kwashiorkor of Nigeria.”

The meeting was attended by Senator Ayoade Adeseun, former Majority leader of the House of Representatives, Hon Mulikat Akande-Adeola, the party’s State Chairman of the Interim Management Committee, (Makarfi group), Muraina Ajibola, former Minister of State for FCT, Oloye Jumoke Akinjide, Dr. Saka Balogun, Chief M. F. Adeegbe, Chief Jacob Adetoro, Alhaji Bisi Olopoeniyan and Senator Hosea Agboola (immediate past Senate Deputy whip) represented by Hon Dayo Ogungbenro among others.
