A  University Don, Professor O.B.C. Nwolise on Thursday declared that Nigerians are yet to see the promises and dividends of their country’s   independence since 1960.

The Professor of Political science at the University of Ibadan said this while delivering the 2018 Samuel Ladoke Akintola Memorial Lecture, titled “Akintola and Self Government” held  at the House of Chiefs, Parliament Building, Secretariat, Ibadan.

Professor Nwolise stressed that it was unfortunate that the President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal government was not ready to listen to Nigerians on the need to find a lasting solution to the problems facing Nigeria as a country by implementing the recommendations of the 2014 Confab.

He maintained that the solutions  to some of the problems confronting Nigeria are contained in the
recommendations of the 2014 National Conference, but that the non implementation of the recommendations as a result of the
refusal of the President Muhammadu Buhari led All Progressives Congress (APC) federal government to implement the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference which was an   insult to the collective intelligence of Nigerians has been depriving the country of the way forward.

Professor Nwolise stressed that the recommendations made by the 2014 CONFAB addressed problems of corruption and injustice in the country, saying, it will not be in the best interest of Nigerians for the Buhari led APC government to throw away all the recommendations.

The Don added that without doubt,
it was unfortunate that “since 1960, Nigerians have not seen the promises and dividends of independence, apart from the sacking of the whitemen  from political power.”

Speaking further, Professor Nwolise said the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Niger – Delta Avengers emerged as response to perceived injustice, saying “in circumstances like this, justice is sweater than peace.”

According to Professor Nwolise, the body language of the present APC led federal government which seems to be encouraging injustice as the factor responsible for the increasing rate of insecurity in the country.

The Don then  described the late Premier of the defunct Western Region, Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola  as a patriotic Nigerian who used his knowledge and political offices to fight to Nigeria’s independence through a motion he moved on March 26, 1957.
