Olam Nigeria Healthy Living Fair in collaboration with Action Health Incorporated, recently organized a free medical outreach seminar for cocoa farmers in Abanyom, in Ikom local government area of Cross River State as part of events to mark the 2018 World Aids Day.
Speaking at the event, the head of cocoa sustainability of Olam Cocoa, Nigeria, Mrs. Jennifer Abuah, said HIV/AIDS poses a major health challenge in the company and it is working very seriously in order to tackle the prevalence as it affects th Cocoa farmers.
Abuah said Hiv/Aids has been around for years and stressed the need for cocoa farmers to embrace regular checkups to know their Hiv status as well as to address other health issues to live healthy.
She praised the farmers for their hard work and the quality of cocoa they produce, describing Cross River cocoa as the best in the country.
The programme officer, Action Health Incorporated, Mrs. Oluwafunso Bukoye, identified cocoa farmers as critical stakeholders in the fight against Hiv/Aids and other health related issues and emphasized continuous partnership.
Bukoye urged the farmers to keep abreast with issues brought to their knowledge regarding their health to enhance a healthy life at all times
She siad the theme of this year’s celebration “know your status” was apt and enjoined cocoa farmers to imbibe healthy lifestyles.
Some resource persons who spoke, including Arit Williams Egbe and Nyang Essien called for regular intake of food rich in vitamins, adding that “daily intake of good nutritional diets will enhance their health”.
They also advised nursing mothers to practice exclusive brest feeding for optimal growth and development of babies.
They cautioned the farmers against sharing of sharp objects, which forms one of the ways Hiv can be transmitted.
Also they advised married couples to be faithful as spouses and stressed the need for youths to abstain from unprotected sex.
The event featured drama, Hiv/Aids counseling and testing, test for malaria and quiz competition.
