Nationwide League club owners spend N.4M weekly – Gaiya
By; Jacob Onjewu Dickson, Kaduna.
Club owners that have teams participating in the Nationwide League I, have a burden of spending at least N400,000 Naira weekly in executing their home and away matches.
Chairman of JZ United, Honourable Godfrey Gaiya disclosed this in an interview with New Nigerian Sports in Kaduna.
According to him, the money is spent either on accommodation, transportation and feeding players and team officials on away matches, or paying indemnities, accommodation and other expenses of referees and other match officials when playing at home.
He described the situation as uncomfortable, challenging the management of the Nationwide League Board to be creative in fashioning out ways to raise funds through sponsorship to support teams.
“I wear the shoes of the club owners and know the pains they go through. Every week you have to pay the accommodation and indemnities of referees. No club owner in the Nationwide League spends less than N400, 000 Naira every week,” he explained.
He said that if he emerges the Chairman of the Nationwide League  Board in the upcoming election, he would ensure that such expenses are reduced to the barest minimum.
“My first responsibility if I win the election is to make life easier for the club owners. I will take away some of the expenses that are now being handled by the club owners,” he assured.
