Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State has said that the National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) is an active participant in the rehabilitation of degrading landscapes to provide pasture for livestock development in the State.
He made this known while delivering his speech as the Guest Speaker at the NAPRI open day held at the Institute.
Governor Masari said the 5Ha Seeded land at Sukwanawa Village in Daura Local Government Area has been confirmed by NAPRI to be ripe for harvest to provide seeds for planting in the remaining 45 Ha.
According to the governor, the state is looking forward to having more technical expertise and support, as they want to strive to take all important sub sectors to the next level.
On the security intervention, Governor Masari said, apart from the foregoing measures, the state government has been up and doing in providing and ensuring security in collaboration with the security agencies not only in the frontline local government areas, but across the length and breadth of the state in general.
Speaking on the provision of infrastructural facilities for the sustainable animal production in the prevailing circumstances, the state government has constructed 10 clinics and 10 primary schools in Fulani settlements at the identified locations choosen by themselves.
“We have equally conducted routine animal vaccination exercises against deadly animal diseases, and instituted a drug revolving scheme for accessibility to animal health care.
“Katsina State is among the leading top five livestock producers in Nigeria but the combined effects of incidences of farmers-herders clashes and cattle rustling initially, and recurring armed banditry and kidnapping most recently have degraded livestock ownership and production in the state and have made statistical recording for planning even very difficult if not impossible.
The Governor lamented that for over a decade, the livestock sub-sector in Katsina State has suffered serious dislocations with far reaching socio- economic implications on our people.
Masari hoped that the speech will be comprehended within the context of sustainable strategies to mitigate security challenges in animal production.
