Former England and Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand has described Argentina and FC Barcelona skipper, Lionel Messi as a magician who knows what to do with the ball at any time even as he extolled the quality of African players, describing them as highly talented.
Ferdinand who was in Nigeria courtesy of Guinness Nigeria PLC for its Fan Made For More Promo told New Nigerian Sports during in a recent interview that Lionel Messi is always difficult to mark out in a match because he is fully talented and has a way of deceiving his opponents.
“I played with Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United and found him to be a talented player but Lionel Messi is a magician because he knows what to do with the ball at any given time and when you’re expecting him to be by your side, you won’ t know when he will manoeuvre his way and keep you panting”, he said.
On the quality of African players, he singled out Austin Jay Jay Okocha, Finidi George, Kanu Nwankwo and Victor Ikpeba for praise but was quick to point out that Didier Drogba is the toughest African player he played against because he is strong, intelligent and good with ability to score important goals.
Ferdinand who has since gone back to London used the visit to present cheques to winners of the organised coaching clinic at the Legacy Pitch of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
