May Day: Ondo Workers Protest Non Payment Of Leave Bonus

Workers in Ondo State on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest at the Acade Ground venue of year 2018 May Day celebration over the pronouncement of the state Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu that there is no money to pay leave bonuses.

The pronouncement which did not go down well with workers received immediate and spontaneous thunderous reaction of “no no no” across the venue even as workers trooped out of their stands to further register their protest I front of the podium.
The Workers’ reaction how ever drowned the voice of the Governor who had to cut short his speech midway even as security operatives surged forward to safe the Governor from further embarrassment.
The Workers had earlier embarked on a match past in a peaceful atmosphere during the celebration of the annual May Day even as the Governor mounted the podium to acknowledged the salute of Workers.
The message of the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ayuba Wabba which was delivered by the Vice Chairman of NLC, Comrade High Chief Akuresanmi Bakare had urged Government at all levels to provide working tools and facilities to make workers more effective.
Comrade Wabba lamented that the health care system in the country has remained a shadow of what it used to be in the years back, adding that Principal factors responsible for the decline include funding issues and decay in infrastructure and technology.
Comrade Bakare, who is also the traditional ruler of the ancient town of Oda in Akure South Local Government noted that the nation is immersed in a renewed outbreak of blood_letting and violence.
His words, “with the military deployed in twenty seven of our states, it is very clear that the country is drifting to a precipice”.
Earlier in her address, the state Chairman of NLC, Comrade Bose Daramola threw her support behind the fight against corruption which was embarked upon by the Federal Government.
She urged government at all levels to ensure that their support for the war against corruption remained unwavered, saying unemployment has become a threat to social security.
Commenting on the theme for the year 2018 Workers celebration, which is, ” Labour Movement in National Development; Dare to struggle, Dare to win” Comrade Daramola noted that workers should contribute their quota to nation building in spite of all odds.
