Man 46, Commits Suicide Days To Burial Of Late Father

Otomo community in Ika Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State was on Tuesday thrown into mourning mode following the death of a 46 year old man.

The victim, who was identified as Aniekan Peter Sunday was said to have killed himself through suicide in the early hours of the day in his compound four days to the burial of his late aged father.


Although reasons for the action remains unknown, but the act marveled the entire community as the news spread round, viewing it as unscrupulous, barbaric and dubious act.


The village head of Otomo, Chief Sunday Thomas Mbaba who confirmed the incident said that he was informed by a youth called Philip, who ran to his palace upon hearing the news.


According to Chief Thomas, he immediately informed the police about the unfortunate incident.


“The DPO of Ika Division,  Musa Rilwanu, a kind hearted man immediately followed me to the scene of the incident to see things for himself  to investigate what could have been the cause of  Aniekan’s death,” he said.


Others from Otomo community who spoke to New Nigerian on the act said the deceased was the only surviving son to bury his late father whose remains were to be buried this Friday.


According to them, “the day Aniekan killed himself was a day the community had declared to commence the cleaning of the compound in preparation for burial of his late father this Friday.  


“Late Aniekan whose presence was very important in the burial of his father, packed into his uncompleted building located few metres away from his late father’s compound less than two weeks before the suicide. He died leaving his aged mother and relatives,“ they added.    
When contacted on phone, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, DSP Odiko MacDon said that he was not aware of the incident but described the act as unfortunate.  


“I have not been informed about the incident but it is very sad and unfortunate if it is true that the man took his life. We will investigate into the matter,” PPRO stated.
