Following the alleged killing of three persons at Ori-Oke Alala Community in Makoko area of Ebute- metta in Lagos by police operatives last week, the Commissioner of Police Edgal Imohimi has ordered the removal of the head of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the command over his alleged role in the incident.
This happens, as the police boss has set up a high power investigation panel to dig into the incident and unravel the truth.
Edgal, who made the disclosure while updating journalists on the incident on Tuesday at a media briefing, said the Anti- Kidnapping Unit boss was relieved of his appointment in order to pave for impartial investigation.
He hinted that the high powered investigation was instituted based on the new evidence that emerged from a petition written by a lawyer to the church.
His words, “As a first step, the head of the policemen who ordered the police to the assignment and who incidentally is the head of the Anti-Kidnapping unit has been relieved of his appointment to give way for impartial investigation.
“Based on new evidence that have emerged from a petition written by a lawyer from the church, I have ordered an indepth investigation into the matter.
“As a first step, the head of the policemen who ordered the police to the assignment and who incidentally is the head of the Anti-Kidnapping unit has been relieved of his appointment to give way for impartial investigation.
” All the policemen in the unit that went on the assignment have been brought to State Headquarters for proper investigation.
“Also, a letter of investigation had been sent to the head of Landgrabbers Unit at the Ministry of Justice and he has given his statement as to the assignment and what transpired.
“We are also in the process of obtaining statement from the leadership of the church and other witnesses.” he said.
The police commissioner further assured members of the public that the investigation will be thorough and anyone found guilty of abuse of power will be penalised.
Edgal explained that  the fracas which led to the death of deceased occured following arguments among residents of Ilaje community og Makoko in Yaba, officials from the Ministry of Justice and the Taskforce operatives attached to the officials.
According to the CP, at the scene where a church was located, an unknown landgrabber attacked the Policemen and the officials during which they were forced to defend themselves.
It will be recalled that one Johnson Emola and two other youths were allegedly shot dead by police operatives attached to the Lagos State Taskforce on Land grabbers and the Anti- Kidnapping Unit of the Lagos State Command last week Thursday on.anassignment at the community.
According to report, the  head of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit had released his operatives to give a backup to the Taskforce without an approval from the appropriate quarters.
It was learnt that the Apostles Church of God, built in the community which is predominantly an Ilaje settlement was allegedly set ablazed  by the Taskforce operatives.
Findings revealed that the Ilajes have been residing in the community for over 50 years, while a suit is pending in court between them and some claimants to the ownership of the land.
