In its bid at ensuring quality education in its public schools, the Kano State Government is set to increase teachers salaries by at least 20 per cent.
Chairman of a committee set up by the state government to come up with an education policy, Professor Garba Shehu disclosed this while interacting with newsmen in Zaria, where his committee members are meeting to fine tune the policy from a draft earlier produced.
“The policy is being laid down. We are coming up with it within this year. We should finish and make everything available so that it would be captured in next year’s budget,” he added.
He explained that the increase would be at least 20 per cent of basic salaries.
Professor Shehu said that apart from the pay rise which is expected to commence in 2019, the committee is also suggesting other welfare packages like timely promotion, provision of staff quarters, loans for vehicles or motorcycles, and other motivations that would make teaching attractive to the brightest students.
He was optimistic that with the implementation of the policy, Kano State’s public schools would compete favourably with the private.
“Kano public schools will be good as private so that people will be confused where to take their children to,” he said.
Professor Shehu who is the Provost of the Aminu Kano College of Islamic and Legal Studies praised Governor Ganduje for his people oriented projects that have touched the lives of Kano people.
“The government has executed projects that affect the needs of people from all strata. Health, agriculture, education are things that touch everybody.
” Ganduje is giving education priority in Kano State. He has received award in terms of primary healthcare delivery. Now there is a programme that all civil servants in Kano State must be insured.
“Three per cent of the salary deducted and they and their family members benefit from free health care. Ordinarily, they may spend more than half of their salary on healthcare, but with this intervention, it is massive one for healthcare delivery,” he said.
He therefore, called on Kano electorate to vote for Ganduje for a second term, so that he can continue to impact positively.
