The Catholic Archbishop of Kaduna Diocese, Most Reverend Man’oso Ndagoso has described the proposed religious bill by Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai to regulate preaching in the state as uncalled for.
The Archbishop stated this while observing this years Chrism mass at the Saint Joseph’s Catholic Cathedral in Kaduna Wednesday.
He said already there are existing laws in the country to address issues of crisis caused by persons who hide under religion to wreck havoc and so there is no need for new laws.
According to him, “We don’t need the religious bill. We have enough laws in our existing status either at the Federal, State or Local government levels that can deal with people who masquerade around or hide under Islamic or Christian religion to cause havoc, confusion among others.

“We don’t have to make new laws. We have enough laws that will… How do you control a spirit? I mean spiritual activities cannot be contained by anybody.

“And on this matter, for the first time Jamaatul Nasril Islam (JNI) and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) agreed that the law is not for the common good.

“Laws are supposed to help us and not to inhibit us. We therefore hope the government will listen to the voice of reasoning,” he said.
To the Priests, Ndagoso challenged them to read the bill, understand it before making comments on it in public to avoid misleading their followers and other people.

He said the essence of the Chrism is for the Priests to renew their vows and commitments to God just as he called on the political leaders too to emulate the gesture by renewing their commitments to Nigerians every year.

“Maybe if they do it every year, that would remind them not to forget the promises they made and the oath they took. Because human nature, we easily forget the promises and commitment we’ve made.

“So on this day and every year, we remind ourselves as priests that this is the reason why we are what we are and renew our vows and commitments to be faithful, to preach the gospel. So we suggest that our political leaders too should every year, renew the promises and commitment made to Nigerians. That simply means we don’t forget promises we made,” Rev. Ndagoso stated.
