From JUSTINA ASISHANA – Minna
The contractor handling the construction of a bridge across River Kaduna yesterday said that there will be no christmas or new year break for all the workers involved in the project as they want to meet up with the time given for the contract.
The site Engineer,Momoh Abubakar said that they have only nine more months to complete the project adding that they will use all the time available to do it, adding that, they have started working at night.
Speaking with journalists who were on inspection tour of the project at Shiroro in Niger state yesterday, Abubakar said that all machinaries are in place to ensure speed in work pace.
“We are establishing multiple commissions just to meet up with the pace so that we can overcome the lost period”, the Engineer said.
The construction of a bridge across River Kaduna at Shiroro is part of the projects being undertaken in the N9 billion bond secured from the Capital market by the Niger state government.
According to Abubakar, the project which had spent nine months out of the 18 months given was delayed because of the revise design drawing and the agitation of the host community for compensation.
“It was the revised design that was not at hand as at the time we needed it which prompted for the revised schedule. Though we are far behind the revised schedule but we are working hard to meet up.
“Even this Christmas and New Year, no one is going anywhere, no break or holiday, all workers will be here in order to deliver this project and very soon, there will be tremendous improvement”, the Engineer said.
Also speaking, the Assistant Principal Resident Engineer, Mohammed Umar expressed optimism of the ability of the contractor to finish the project before the period given elapse.
Though he admitted that only eight per cent of the job has been done, Umar however said that with a faster machine which is going to be brought next week, there will be progress in the project.
When the Journalists visited the rehabilitation of Kwakuti-Kafinkoro-Gwada Road, there was progress in the job as about 31 per cent of the road have been cleared.
The Principal Resident Engineer, Aminu Legbo said that more kilometres would have been cleared but the rainy period stalled the progress of the job.
He said, “The contract was awarded in January but the contractor mobilized to site by march and so far, about 31 per cent have been completed though the time elapse is about 36 per cent. The discrepancy is due to the weather condition but now that the rain is gone, pace of work have picked up.”
Legbo said that the site clearance is up to channel 41 + 100 and they have constructed about 30 culverts of various sizes expressing satisfaction with the job done.
He stated that they will meet up with the 24 months period given to them by the state government.
