The Federal Government has been called upon to include Alhaji Bashir Othman Tofa into the National Award receipients for the role he played in the 1993 general elections for Nigeria’s democratic balance.
The call was made by a prominent politician and a political associate to president Muhammadu Buhari, Alhaji Nasir Muktar in an interview with our correspondent in Kano.
He noted that Alhaji Bashir Tofa must be remembered for being a great hero in history Nigeria’s political history.
He said that without Bashir Tofa as a contestant, Chief Abiola would not have been abe to contest the said annuled election, therefore Bashir Tofa and his running mate, Chief Sylvester Ugoh as well as the then INEC Chairman, Professor Humphrey Nwosu should also be honoured equally with Chief Abiola, his running mate Babagana Kingibe and late Gani Fawehinmi.
Similarly, Alhaji Nasir disclosed that in the present democratic dispensation, Alhaji Bashir Othman Tofa deserves the national honour like Chief M.K.O.Abiola because they all played an excellent role towards the democratic progress of this great country despite the annulment of that peacefull and fair election that Nigeria witnessed.
He pointed out that Alhaji Bashir Tofa has no right to reject the award and he is eligible to receive it.
Commenting on the nation’s democracy Day, Alhaji Nasir Muktar said that President Buhari has done a commendable effort by changing Nigeria’s democracy day from 29th May to June 12 becauce 29 May was a day when a military regime handed over power to yet another selected former military man as president which should not be selected as democracy day unlike June 12.
In conclussion, Alhaji Nasir Muktar advised Nigerians to love one another and allow peace and unity to reign because God has made us to stay and live together.
He thanked President Buhari for his commitment to Nigeria’s progress despite all the leadership challenges.
