Inspite of economic recession, increase health sector funding still possible – OYHA Speaker.

Speaker of the Oyo state House of Assembly Honourable Micheal Adeyemo on Thursday declared that increasing funding for the health sector is achievable in Nigeria despite the present economic recession in the country.
Honourable Adeyemo said this at the opening of a Two-Day ‘Legislative Advocacy Retreat for Oyo State House of Assembly on Increase Domestic Funding for Health Especially Child and Family Health Issues’ holding at Begonia Hotel in Oyo town.
Represented by the House Deputy Speaker, Hon.Abdulwasiu Musah, Hon Adeyemo disclosed that there will be an increase in the budget allocation for the health sector in Oyo state as from 2017, adequate funding will be provided to fund the health sector in the state as from 2017.
The Speaker stated that Oyo state House of Assembly in demonstration of its commitment towards improving health condition across the state has passed the Child Rights Law, Health Insurance Bill, Female Genital Prohibition Bill and Anti-Smoking Bill.
“We are determined to improve the health sector in the state. That is why we passed the Child Rights Law, Health Insurance Bill, Female Genital Prohibition Bill and Anti-Smoking Bill. We want to assure you that all other bills on our table that are health related would be passed in the next two weeks,” he said.
Hon Adeyemo added “we are assuring you that the house of assembly will ensure adequate funding of the health sector from the 2017 budget and we will ensure adequate oversight on these projects.
Speaking, on ‘Case for Increase Health Sector Financing’ Health Reform Foundation of Nigeria (HERFON) Executive Secretary, Dr. Emmanuel Abanida maintained that the objective of the retreat was to sensitize and advocate for improved health sector through adequate funding.
Also speaking, a Consultant and Public Health Physician at University College Hospital (UCH),Dr. David Adewole urged that  all hands must be on deck towards improving the lives of the people by implementing affordable healthcare services in the state and implement state supported social health insurance programme.
