The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC and the Nigeria Police Force, NPF have successfully prosecuted 61 cases of electoral offences since after the 2015 general elections.
The disclosure was made by the commission Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu when the team of Special Investigative Panel on the December 10 Rivers State re-run elections set up by the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris visited the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
The chairman attributed the prosecution’s success to the commission’s cooperation with the security operatives especially the Police, hinting that the commission received 120 case files from the agency for prosecution. ” I am happy to say that we have so far recorded 61 successful prosecutions as a result of the cooperation of the security agencies” he stressed.
He expressed the commission’s resolve to investigate and sanction erring staff and its readiness to fully cooperate with the investigation panel to punish perpetrators of violence and killings in the Rivers re-run elections.
The INEC Chairman commiserated with the security agencies over the loss of lives recorded in the Rivers re-run elections, particularly the death of DSP Mohammed Alkali and his orderly.
