I’m not going for Nationwide Chairmanship for monetary benefits – Gaiya
JACOB ONJEWU DICKSON, Kaduna
The need to grow the Nationwide League 1 informed the decision of
immediate past Chairman, House Committee on Sports in the House of Representatives, Honourable Godfrey Gaiya’s decision to contest the chairmanship of the league, with no ulterior motive aimed at getting material benefits.
Hon. Gaiya gave the assurance in an interview with New Nigerian Sports,
stressing that the league where his team; JZ United features prominently, would begin to witness all round improvement, as soon as he emerges winner of the elections billed to take place soon.
“Being a source of discovery of talents at the grassroots, all efforts must be made to ensure that clubs get the desired support required to remain afloat. This will be our area of priority.
“It is so sad that some very good teams had to be relegated from the Nationwide League 1 because they could not afford to travel to play their away-games. All these and other reasons are why we want to come onboard to embark on a calculated sponsorship drive that will put money in the accounts of the participating teams,” he said.
He said that being a feeder league for the professional league in Nigeria, the Nationwide League, if properly managed will live up to its billing by churning out good players that can replace those going abroad to ply their trade.
“We should not be crying when players go abroad because we can replace
them from the grassroots. Right now, fellow club owners have realized
this and are backing us to contest for the position,” he said.
END.
