The Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) members at The Polytechnic Ibadan on Wednesday declared an indefinite strike to protest the non payment of the 8months salary arrears owed them by the Oyo State Government.
Declaring the indefinite strike, members of the union vowed not to resume work until the arrears are cleared by the Oyo state government .
Addressing newsmen shortly after the commencement of the indefinite strike , NASU Chairman, The Polytechnic Ibadan chapter, Comrade Ibrahim Akande disclosed that members of the union were left with no other option than to declare the indefinite strike in order to press home their demands, adding that the failure of the state government to increase monthly subventions of the institution has caused a lot of damages in the institution.
Comrade Akande said part of the reasons for the strike ” is the reduction of the monthly subventions” and that NASU will not resume work if the government fail to increase monthly subvention of the institution.
“As at today, we have withdrawn our services because of the fact that you will agree with me that sometimes ago there was a crisis in all the tertiary institutions in Oyo state while we agitated that the state government should pay our outstanding arrears and increase the subventions being given to all the tertiary institutions in Oyo state. At The Polytechnic Ibadan, they owed us nothing less than eight months’ arrears. And this emanated from non payment of salaries due to the fact that Oyo state government reduced the subventions being given to The Polytechnic Ibadan.” he said.
Comrade Akande added, “this time around, the government pronounced that they have added to the subventions being given to us, they have said it severally on the media that The Polytechnic Ibadan is being given a proposed 83 point something million. But to our surprise, when we had it on Monday that 77 point something million was given as subvention for the month of June, having believe that, we will not be tasked. “
“Oyo state government had deducted 100 percent tax from the 77 point something million being given to us. If you deduct the 77 point something million from the 226 which is the wage bill, you will see that the institution is going to augment the the salaries with nothing less than 150 million every month. “
Speaking further, the NASU Chairman stated that “for the last year, we are being owed 8 months salaries. Though the governing council of the Polytechnic Ibadan has been doing their best to make sure that our monthly salaries are being paid since January this year”, adding, “but, they are yet to pay us the eight months arrears or come out with modalities on how to pay the arrears. And that is the reason the union is embarking on strike action today. They should pay us the arrears so that we will not labour in vain.”
“We commenced an indefinite strike action from today, Wednesday 8th August 2018 because we are being owed eight months salary arrears and we are not going to suspend the strike action until the government and the governing council which is their agent do the needful. We decided not to close down the gates of the institution because ASUP is not on ground but the trend of events will now determine the next action to take. The trend of events can aggravate out tension. Even as I am talking to you, I just spoke with the our national secretary and he has assured this branch that they are going to join us on Monday for the protest”.
He however lauded members of the union for abiding with the union’s directive on the strike, remarked that the union decided to commence the strike because the government had failed to fulfil its promises to the union..
