As Muslim faithful across Nigeria prepare for the commencement of this year’s month long Ramadan fast, Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State has advised sellers of foodstuff and other consumables against arbitrary price increase.
The governor said price increase in foodstuffs and other essential commodities by sellers especially in markets across the state during the annual Ramadan fast was not only uncharitable but ungodly as well.
He spoke at the Government House when he hosted members of the association of market men and women who are members of the caucas of the governing All Progressive Congress in the state who were on a courtesy visit to him.
Sani Bello noted that while the Ramadan fast period is an auspicious time to receive Allah’s blessings through individual Muslim’s deed, arbitrary price increase on goods particularly foodstuffs, consumables including fruits and veggies could amounts to turning the hands of Allah’s blessings backwards.
He therefore cautioned traders against price increase on goods and services as the Ramadan fast approaches. He said the Ramadan period should not be used to make unreasonable interest and profiteering.
Governor Sani Bello noted with concern that it had become an annual bad tradition for traders who sell food items to jerk up prices of their goods as the Ramadan and festive periods approaches.
He argued that the Ramadan period and the accompanying festive periods are not for profiteering but are holy period to attract Allah’s blessings and mercies. “The holy month should not be used for taking undue advantage of others by making uncharitable profits by increasing the prices of goods” he added.
“What we have experienced in the past is that when the Ramadan period comes, traders usually hike the prices food items. I hope this year, you will try and curb this practice so that we can attract Allah’s blessings.”
While he lamented over such selfcentredness by some traders, he said the emphasis in the conduct of every individual Muslim during the Ramadan period was on how to do good and obtain Allah’s reward.
He said it was proper for Muslim faithful who were traders to reduce the cost of goods particularly food items during such holy periods.
The APC market caucus members assured the governor of their unflinching support to his administration even as they pledged to remain law abiding and committed to the ideals of the APC led administration.
