Over twenty-one thousand primary and junior secondary school teachers in Bauchi state may have a course to smile soon following last week approval by Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar for promotion to their next grade levels, some with even accelerated promotions.
The chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Prof. Yahaya Ibrahim Yero who dropped the hint for the promotion approval, recalled that 2012 was the year some teachers with the board were last promoted to their next grade levels.
Prof. Yahaya Yero, who was speaking while receiving captains of the Democratic Enlightenment Initiative (DEI) in his office Monday, explained that even those promoted in 2012 have their promotion not monetarily effected.
Yero, who gave the number of 21, 457 primary and junior secondary school benefitting teachers of the mass promotion, said however that copies of promotion approval by the Governor were immediately sent to the Ministry of Finance and Office of the Accountant General for subsequent implementation.
“The board has done its best in effecting the promotion of desired teachers, the governor has also done his best by the quick response and approval for promoting the penciled down teachers and directed for implementation. It is therefore now left to the Ministry of Finance and Office of the Accountant General to take a queue on the matter”, Yero said.
Prof. Yero while giving the financial involvement of the promotion exercise as N154, 792, 920: 47k said however that he is not in a position to know the methodology or when the Finance Ministry and Office of the Accountant General could implement the teachers’ promotion as he cannot speak on their behalf.
The chairman also Monday at a meeting with executives of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and Education Secretaries across the twenty Local Government Areas of the state to briefed the participants on the magnanimity of Governor Mohammed Abubakar in approving the teachers’ promotion.
He thanked members of the five committees appointed by the board who sacrificed their comfort, precious time, and dedicated themselves to the ground work without which the promotions wouldn’t have been a reality.
Yero commended Governor Mohammed Abubakar for his concern and passion for education, focus, and foresightedness for uplifting education in Bauchi state, saying the governor has never turn down any memo by the board.
“The Governor happily and graciously approved for the backlog of promotion to be implemented, and that is the main reason why we felt we should call all the stakeholders, particularly the NUT to be at the board this morning so that we can formally inform them about this development”, Yero said.
Responding to the approval for the promotion by the governor, the state NUT chairman, Comrade Danjuma Saleh commended the board chairman, and Governor Mohammed Abubakar who vehemently, passionately approved the promotions with all the attendant financial involvement.
