Okon Otop’s strike in the 34thminute, was enough to give his side another win, this time, over Sunshine Stars.
Go Round had previously won at home against Akwa United (1-0), Nasarawa United (2-1) and Abia Warriors (1-0) and Otop’s glancing header off a sublime cross from Adeseun Adelani beat the goalkeeper, Moses Ocheje.
Okon’s goal was not the only time he had been in goal scoring position on the day.
In the 12th minute, he was freed by Ugonna Ezenwaka but he continued to dally on the ball, moving it from one foot to another until he was dispossessed of it.
Sunshine Stars also had two chances in the first half; in the 17thminute when it took a Chile Azu header to clear the ball to safety and in the 20th minute when Kehinde Adedipe’s shot from distance was saved by Stanley Nwabali.
A minute before half time, Omotayo Adebogun also rattled the goalkeeper but it was Go Round FC who went into the break the obviously happier side.
At the start of the 2nd half, Duke Udi rang some changes, bringing in Yahuza Bello to replace Sunday Emmanuel and later in the 58thminute, Joseph Abiodun in place of Sikiru Alimi.
However, the second period was not as eventful as the first with little or nothing from the sides in terms of penetration.
But Chile Azu’s free kick in the 66thminute ensured Ocheje stretched full length to parry and then Morris Chukwu in the 70th whose shot from distance was cuddled like a baby by Ocheje.
With one minute left to play, Sunshine thought they had equalised when a mistake by George Vincent put them through but Yahuza Bello failed to get the ball past Stanley Nwabali who seemed beaten already.
There were sighs of relief from the Go Round FC fans when the referee sounded the final whistle.
Duke Udi conceded victory to the better side.
I want to congratulate my opponents. No matter how you play, football is about results. Football is about taking your chances. They took there own chance and we lost ours. They did well. They are a fighting team with a good coach,” Udi said.
Ngozi Elechi of Go Round admitted it was a relief after the final whistle.
It is a relief because before now we have been thinking about this match and the remaining three. For this game, we rate Sunshine very well. I know the coach, a good friend of mine. Taking three points is very important for the team that is why I am happy we won today.”
