Palpable fear is reigning at Opoyosa, Oritamerin, Abebi, Idikan Inalende and Orita merin areas of Ibadan following prolonged violent clashes between rival hoodlum groups terrorizing the areas.
Already security has been beefed up around the areas as men of the Oyo State Police Command as well as men of the Oyo State joint Security “Operation Burst'” have taken over perceived hot spots in the areas as well as arresting suspected hoodlums said to be behind the mayhem.
New Nigerian gathered that scores of suspects have been arrested by the security agents raiding the battle zones in search of those behind the mayhem which reared its ugly head few days ago.
As at the time of filing this story, several traders in the affected areas have deserted their shops and homes as a result of the fresh onslaught on hoodlums and touts after an alleged attack on a policeman said to be on duty in the area.during which the said policeman was injured.
It was learnt that while the security agencies who stormed the area were making frantic efforts at restoring normalcy, some of the hoodlums were said to be looting and raiding traders in remote parts of the areas especially in the midnight.
Sources in the troubled areas said the violent clash erupted last week when three persons were feared killed with many others sustaining injuries during the fracas at Idikan area of Ibadan between members of rival groups of the hoodlums at a yearly carnival held in the area..
New Nigerian gathered that since last Tuesday’s clash, members of the rival groups have been engaging in reprisal attacks on each other thereby, subjecting residents in the areas to untold hardship as well as living in palpable fear.
Commenting on the fracas, Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Adekunle Ajisebu declared that he was not aware of the causalities, but would contact the Divisional Police Officer ( DPO) in charge of the affected areas saying, “I am not aware of any death. However, there was actually a public disturbance by some hoodlums. The police responded swiftly and restored normalcy. Some arrests were made.”
The PPRO hinted that police investigations are still ongoing over the mayhem.
