The Kaduna State Government, led by Governor Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai has set up a committee to design its education policy to fast track delivery of quality education.
The state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Ja’afaru Sani, said at a news briefing in Kaduna on Monday that the setting up of the committee was approved by the state Executive Council.
“The committee will look at the National Policy on Education and adopt what is workable, considering the state peculiarities and realities.
“Above all, the policy will guide the state government, the ministry of education and its agencies and all relevant stakeholders in the sector on how things should be done.
“The decision was taken on Monday at the state Executive Council Meeting, following a memo by the state ministry of education on ways to improve the quality of education in the state.
“The council considered it, extensively discussed and approved the setting up of the committee to come up with a draft education policy for the state,” Sani said.
He said members of the committee would be drawn from the Civil Service Commission, office of the Head of Service, Teachers Service Board, Parent Teachers Association, and the ministry.
Others members would come from the Federal Ministries of Education and that of Science and Technology, the World Bank, SUBEB, DFID-Education Data Research and Evaluation and three local government chairmen representing senatorial districts.
In a related development, the state executive council has also approved the setting up of a Task Team Committee for Continues Education to get school drop outs back to school.
He said the committee was mandated to develop strategies, plan, programmes and curriculum that would accommodate the drop outs and those who left school unable to learn how to read and write.
According to him, the step was taken to reduce the level of crime in the state, largely being perpetuated by uneducated youths.
“This will go a long way in reducing the menace of miscreants who indulge in one form of criminality or the other because they have not acquired basic education that would enable them face day-to-day challenges.
“The initiative would give them a second chance to acquire basic education that would enable them make right choices and decisions.”
Members of the task team committee would come from the education ministry, National Open University, World Bank, University of Abuja’s Centre for Continues Education and Kaduna State University.
The rest are Commissioners for Local Government Affairs and that of Women Affairs, Special Adviser, Result Delivery Unit, Permanent Secretary Bureau of Establishment and Management Services, and three local council chairmen.
