El Amin would dominate Polo for a long time – Babangida
By; JACOB ONJEWU DICKSON, Kaduna.
The Kaduna El Amin Polo Team will continue to dominate the Nigerian Polo scene for a long time, even after the present crop of players have retired from playing actively, patron of the team, Alhaji Mohammed Babangida has said.
He expressed this while speaking to New Nigerian Sports at the closing ceremony of the 2015 Kaduna International Polo Tournament, where his team won the Georgian Cup for a record 12th time.
According to him, El Amin has been grooming players, and they are already reaping from the project as one of the players on this year’s winning team was from the pool of groomed players.
Commenting on how he feels winning his 12th Georgian trophy, he said he was grateful to Almighty Allah who granted them strength and victory.
“We are grateful to Allah for giving us the strength to compete. We have been competing for the Georgian Cup for the past 17 years, out of which we won 12,” he said.
When asked on how he expects Polo to be in Nigeria 10 years from now, he expressed optimism that the game would have developed to provide stars that can hold their own internationally.
“The game is growing every year. In 10 years, it would be more competitive with better quality horses and more sponsorship. Right now in Kano every year, they discover between 10 to 15 players. In 20 years, we would compete internationally,” he added.
