Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Honourable Yakubu Dogara has lauded the roles being played by the Online media in Northern Nigeria in particular and the entire country in general.
Dogara expressed this, after he received an award from the Arewa Online Publishers Forum at the Senate President’s office on Tuesday May 14, 2019.
“I am highly impressed and very happy that the online media has come to stay in Nigeria and is filling in the gaps,” he said.
Speaking further, Dogara who was represented by the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Honourable Abdulrazak Namdas said that with the vibrancy of the Arewa Online Publishers Forum, the North can now tell its own story without relying on others to help it do it.
“Arewa Publishers Forum has given us hope that this part of the country is covered and its prospects and huge achievements will be effectively given publicity,” he said.
He lamented that unlike in the past that the mainstream media, which was dominated by the South chooses what it wishes to publish about the North, times are set to change.
“Before now, the media kills stories from the North but now we are happy because our voices will be heard all over,” he added.
He however, charged the forum to be wary of quacks and should ensure only professionals are its members.
“I urge you to know yourselves and differentiate between quacks and professionals. On this note, we accept the award and are proud of it,” he added.
The Arewa Online Publishers Forum, which has membership across the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, also presented awards to Senate President, , Senator Shehu Sani, Senator Kabiru Marafa and Senator Magnus Abe.
The awards were in recognition of their vibrant contributions to democracy in the 8th Assembly.
