As Nigerians observed Democracy Day on Wednesday, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, has urged people of the state to use the occasion to rededicate themselves to pursuing issues that cement the nation’s national cohesion and peaceful co-existence.
In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Ekerete Udoh, Governor Emmanuel also lauded the deepening value of the country’s  democratic culture since the return to civil rule in 1999.
“Our democracy has grown by leaps and bounds in the past 20 years, and Nigerians deserve a pat on the back.
“This occasion, calls for re- dedication of ourselves to pursuing those issues that promote national unity and peaceful  co- existence.”
Meanwhile, the celebration of the democracy day in the state is in low key. Civil servants either travel outside their locations to visit friends and relatives as part of the holiday celebration or go to farm where they have any while others stay at home.
But private business operators across the state, except schools open for normal business activities.
Uyo, the state capital like other parts of the state is calm. Normal activities like parade by uniform organisations, socio-political and cultural groups which usually take place at various centres are not seen anywhere.
However, many people in the state are of the view that declaring today as public holiday by federal government is of no basic significant but a lost, especially for pupils and students who are preparing for final examinations.
This according to them, is because within the last three weeks, the nation experienced four public holidays excluding Saturdays and Sundays.
