The National Chairman of the Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA), Ken Gbalikuma, has reacted to the recent de-registration of 28 political parties in the country by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), saying “the electoral body took the right step at the right time.”
Addressing reporters at a Press conference in Abuja, the PPA Chairman said that the era where members of a family came together to form political parties was over, pointing out that the parties had existed long enough to have established landmarks in the political terrain.
He said that though PPA had been through several conflicts in recent times, it managed to scale the INEC hurdle due to its showing at the polls in Bayelsa and Taraba States where its members occupy a position each in the House of Assembly.
Gbalikwu who alleged that INEC is fueling crisis in the party, advised that the commission stay neutral in the quest of determining the authentic leadership of the party.
He debunked claims that he was preventing the party’s former chairman of the Board of Trustees(BoT), Orji Uzor Kalu, from returning to PPA, saying there were laid down rules in the party’s constitution to admit new or returning members. He said no such effort has been formally made by Kalu to return to the party, adding that as at now the former Abia State governor was officially a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
