Following the dust to dawn curfew imposed on Kafanchan, the headquarters of Jema’a LGA of Kaduna State following attacks and counter attacks as
peaceful protest turned violent when demonstrators went to lay a complain to the council chairman on the persistent killings in the area came under attacked at Emir of Jema’a’s palace junction just on their way back to the point the protest started.
The demonstrators who were accompanied by the police to the Local Government Secretariat, were also being guided back by the security agents to the point the protest started, but on reaching the Emir’s palace first
gate, which is close to the main Kafanchan road, they came under attack.
Our Reporter gathered that the police acted swiftly and dispersed the attackers before asking all the protesters to go home.
Another resident said that refused dump were set on fire before government declared curfew in the area.
At the local government secretariat, the demonstrators could not meet with the chairman, Mr Bege Katuka Humble, but presented their grievances.
Speaking, one of the protesters, Nathan Thaweson said they will
not allow a situation where if there is an attack, the government won’t do anything but always arrest youth including traditional rulers if
there is a reprisal.
The demonstrators say the way the government is handling the security situation in Southern Kaduna is unfair alleging that the government don’t care even if they are exterminated.
“We are disappointed with the lopsidedness of a government we voted into power. The way the Kaduna state government is handling the killings in Southern Kaduna is unfair. People killing the Southern Kaduna locals are
and given compensation while the villagers that are killed in hundreds, the
survivors are sent out of their houses without places to stay,” he claimed.
Some of the Demonstrators say if the government did not stand to address the persistent attacks and always resort to state of emergency, the people will not have any option than to device means of protecting themselves.
