Lagos, being a mini Nigeria, centre of excellence, the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria, with its divergence crime nature, required an intelligent, hard working and result oriented officer with proven records to man the newly restructured Federal Special Anti Robbery Squad (FSARS) in the state, if the purpose for which the Unit was established must be achieved.
The Unit, an arm of the Federal Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCIID), estwhile named Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS), was created with the mandate of tackling and bustling high profile criminal activities.
With all modesty, the Unit, to a large extent left behind its trail huge record of successes, having lived up to expection, but not without some wrong doings.
This last aspect of the activities of operatives across the country, generated public uprorium from a large segment of the society, resulting in its reorganisation
by the Inspector General of Police Ibrahim Idris.
Consequent upon several meetings and intelligence idea, the Inspector General of Police, in a bid to reposition the squad for dilligent performance, moved it under the supervision of Department of Operations at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, headed by DIG Joshak Habila.
Upon his completion of discreet search for a competent officer to head the Lagos office of the Squad, when the IGP eventually deployed Peter Gana, a Chief Superintendent Officer, the decision generated a lot of applause from both within and outside the Force.
Lagosians, who have hitherto not been comfortable with the successive heads of the Squad since the exist of Abba KyarI, heaved a sigh of relief due to their familiarity with Gana, having played a major role in the breakthrough recorded by Abba Kyari during his reign in Lagos.
Pundits and observers of security issues have posited that Gana’s appointment is one of the right decisions made in recent time by the police high command based on (Gana) his pedigree as a distinguished crime buster cum tactician.
His records of achievement, according to them, stands him tall, being an operational cop, who has worked in most difficult terrain of policing job.
They further submitted that the FSARS Lagos O/C possessed the requisite knowledge and experience to crush harden criminals just like his former boss Abba Kyari, who suprintended in same position few years back.
Many are yet to understand the secret behind his being a team player and successful leader, as his lieutenants always find his planned strategies very easy to assimilate and implement successful.
He was once a classroom teacher, who has acquired the nitty gritty of teaching and impartation in the best manner for easy understanding.
Little wonder then, when the PPRO, Zone 2, Command Onikan, CSP Dolapo Badmus, while announcing the appointment of Gana as the new O/C FSARS, Lagos Command, made it clear that Gana was coming to sanitize the Squad.
In order to proof pundits right, Gana upon assumption of office hit the ground running, announcing to armed robbers who care to listen that he is not in Lagos for ” Owanbe or tea party” but for serious business which he is known for.
Without wasting time, his first litmo test to confirm he walks his talks was the cracking of a robbery gang that invaded a warehouse and carted away mobile phones worth Nine Million Naira (N9,000,000,00).
Believing they have succeeded in the game and about settling down to enjoy their loot, Gana in his usual matter, led his men to expose those behind the robbery attack and net them.
This was a case where a son,Kareem Badmus, his mother, Bola Badmus
and his uncle Yusuf Badmus were arrested in possession of some of the phones, leading to the arrest of the perpetrators of the robbery attack by the FSARS operatives.
Members of the notorious robbery gang include Yusuf Badmus, Chimere Njenobi ‘m’ 26 years; Dominic Anawo ‘m’ 36 years; and, Abimbola Austine ‘m’ 30 years.
The Commissioner of Police Lagos Command, Edgal Imohimi while giving a detail account of the breakthrough said, “This is a case of armed robbers who thought they could cover their tracks but the Police eventually beat them to their game.
On the 20/06/2018 at about 0600 hours, while one Kingsley Ochoma was attending to customers, four armed men forced their way into his warehouse, situated at Graceland Estate, Isheri-Oshun, Lagos and held them hostage. In the process, they carted away cartons of phones and accessories worth over Nine Million Naira(N9,000,000).
Based on complaint received about the incident, I directed the Officer In-Charge of FSARS to commence investigation.
The detectives visited the warehouse and recovered some items left behind by the robbers. These items or specimen were critically examined and the observations made were used to unravel the authors of the crime.
The chain of events leading to the arrest of the suspects, started on the 14/08/2018, when one Kareem Badmus ‘m’ and his mother one Bola Badmus ‘f’ were arrested using two of the stolen phones.
During interrogation, they confessed that the phones were given to them by a relation named Yusuf Badmus ‘m’ and they led detectives to apprehend him.
Search was immediately conducted in the house of Yusuf Badmus and seven of the robbed phones were recovered. Also recovered were two locally made cut to size double barrel guns with three(3) live cartridges which he hid inside his operational vehicle, a Nissan Quest with Reg. No. BDG-339-CA.
The said Yusuf Badmus, 36 years later led detectives to arrest his gang members namely:
Chimere Njenobi ‘m’ 26 years;
Dominic Anawo ‘m’ 36 years; and
Abimbola Austine ‘m’ 30 years”.
The Lion hearted Gana, who does not see any assignment as a challenge but an opportunity, took his crushing prowess to Lagos Island renowned to be home to daring and notorious criminals cum gun runners, forcing them to kiss the canvass.
Those of them who dare to challenged the superior fire power of the Gana led FSARS by brandishing firearms at Oke-popo area of the Island on 21/08/2018 at about 2010 hours, are now regretting their action, as they were all apprehended.
In the area of administration, Gana has brought his midas touch to bear by transforming the Unit greatly, instilling discipline in the officers, with strict compliance to the rules of engagement.
No officer dare come to the office without wearing his or her official uniform as directed by the IGP in his reorganization bid. So far, the era of brutal torture and extortion had become a thing of past because he had emphasised his preparedness to deal with any officer caught with in any form of act of indiscipline.
During a visit by this writer recently, it was observed that majority of the officers who usually look rough, with funny / coloured haircut, ear rings have rebranded, making them looking good and approachable.
it was also observed that the once dreaded SARS now have a human face; with civility replacing brutality, as officers now smile while diligently performing their duties. The era of brutal torture and extortion had become a thing of the past.
Though, soft spoken, but highly intelligent, articulate and tough in action, while criminals who had taken his meekness for weakness had met their waterloo in mysterious manner.

A good number of them were sent to tneir early grave during gun duel encounter, while some were captured alive.
The ability and capability of Gana, then a Supritendent of Police (SP), to soar TI great high in.bursting crime, was spotted in 2015 by the then Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Zone 2 Command, Ibrahim Manko, who upon assumption of office pulled him to head the Special Anti-Robbery (SARS) Unit of the zone.
