Former Head of State, General Abdulsalam Abubakar (rtd) has said that community participation in the educational development must be complemented by government.
He stated this at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Zaria Educational Development Association (ZEDA) at its 25thAnniversary celebration held at A.B.U Hotel Hall, Kongo Zaria at the weekend.
General Abdulsalam said, ZEDA is worthy of emulation by any community in Nigeria not only in the northern part and commended the association for its giant strides in ensuring the education and vocational programmes succeed in the last 25 years.
According to him, government alone cannot do it but with the participation of the private organizations investing in the education sector,  educational development will be achieved.
The former Nigerian Head of State, called on wealthy individuals and corporate organizations to support education in their communities like what ZEDA is doing.
He congratulated Kaduna State Governor for giving education a priority by renovating and building infrastructure in schools for an atmosphere of teaching and learning in the public schools in the state.
General Abdulsalam appealed to Nigerians to leave peacefully and love one another, because if there is no peace,  no nation can groom the future  leaders, calling on all hands to be on deck to maintain peace and love.
In his address, the Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir Ahmed el-Rufai expressed appreciation for ZEDA’s efforts on developing education in the last 25 years,
Governor el-Rufai said, he has accepted to restore the lost glory of education in the state particularly the primary education no matter the pains it might cause and there was no going back.
According to him, even the United States of America doesn’t allow private primary schools to operate because of the importance attached as the foundation laying of education but in Nigeria, private primary schools are competing favourably with public schools in numbers.
The governor further said, Kaduna State has concluded plans on having 40 pupils to one teacher in its primary schools and good teaching materials will be provided for teachers.
On the scholarship, Malam Nasir el-Rufai said government will stop giving N15,000 as scholarship rather it will give scholarship on merit, to the deserving best students in the public schools.
