Collation of political parties that took part in the Saturday National Assembly elections in Zamfara state have demanded the immediate removal of the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Asmau Sani Maikudi and the state Police Commissioner, Mr Celestine Okoye over alleged comprise of their duties.
The aggrieved nine opposition parties parties in Zamfara state during a press conference in Gusau said they have passed vote of no confidence on REC and the Commissioner of Police due to the duo involvement in aiding and abetting election rigging by the ruling party.
Speaking on behalf of the collation, the Secretary who is the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Alhaji Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi alleged that the REC deliberately refused to release to them the list of wards and polling units affected by the insecurity across the 14 local government areas of the state.
“We demand for her removal immediately. We no longer have confidence in her. She is a card carrying member of the APC and she was recommended for the job by governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina state and she did a hatchet job because of Masari’s intimacy with governor Yari”, he alleged.
The collation also alleged that the Mr Okoye was biased and would therefore resist any attempt by him to rig the forth coming governorship and state assembly elections.
“The last Saturday’s elections were marred by a lot of electoral malpractices such as heavy financial inducements, supply of incomplete result sheets and ballot box snatching by the agents of the ruling party”, they alleged.
The parties whose chairmen jointly addressed the press are APGA, PDP, Accord Party, ABP, NNP, NRM, YPP, ADC and DPP.
In his reaction, the Head of Department, Voter Education and Publicity, of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Zamfara state office, Malam Garba Galadima said the allegations were baseless.
The Police Commissioner, Mr Okoye dismissed the allegations, describing it as cheap blackmail.
