Coalition Of Civil Society Expresses Optimism On Success Of Kaduna LG Polls

The coalition of civil society organisations in Kaduna State has expressed optimism that the local government elections scheduled for May 12 will witness massive turn out of voters.


This was expressed at a per election press conference held on Friday in Kaduna.


“We also observe that the electorate in Kaduna State are ready and willing to come out enmass on Saturday 12th April, 2018 to exercise their franchise and also vote for candidate of their choice,” text of the statement jointly signed by COMRADE ZUBAIRU MUKHTAR, Chairman and



The group observed that the State Government provided necessary logistics for (KAD-SIECOM) to organize and conduct a peaceful, free, fair and credible election in the state without State Government interference


“We observe that (KAD-SIECOM) is committed to conducting peaceful, free, fair and credible elections in the State by providing a level playing ground for all political parties in the State to participate for the election.


“Our team observed the distribution of electoral materials by (KAD-SIECOM) officials to various Local Government in the State.


“(KAD-SIECOM) accredited some reputable CSOs/NGOs and journalist to observe the Election and to report accordingly without any bias.


“After our consultations with various stakeholders, our team was reassured that concerted efforts have been made to create a conducive and peaceful atmosphere for the conduct of the elections,” the group said.



Local government system has often been described as last bestialized form of democracy because of its affinity to the grass root level, according to the constitution it is mandated that elections are to be held after the expiration of the tenure of incumbent to fill vacant position of local government chairmen and their councilors, it is in fulfilment of this constitutional obligation that Kaduna State Independent Electoral commission (KAD-SIECOM) issued a time table and schedule of activities for the Local Government Elections in the State and various political party candidates emerge as winners in their party primaries in accordance with the State electoral Laws.



They however,  recommended that the State Government should provide enough security during the election to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order in the State.


“We recommend that stakeholders in conjunction with Civil Society Organizations must engage in massive sensitization of voters and preach the gospel of peace and the need for one man one vote.


“We also recommend that political parties and aspirant must sensitize their follower or party loyalist to obey the rules guiding this election and shun any act capable of stalling or leading to cancelation in any ward or pulling unite.”



The group commended the electoral Management body (KADSIECOM) and the Electoral Commissioner in person of Dr.  Yahaya Rilwanu for a wonderful preparation and ensuring logistics and material are ready available and distributed to the 23 local government on time.


“We commend the State Government especially His Excellency Mal. Nasir Ahmed El-Rufa’i for taking the bull by the horn to conduct Local Government Elections in Kaduna State even when other State are Scared of conducting same elections and complaining of poor allocation from the Federal Government. Indeed Mal. Nasir Ahmed El-Rufa’i is a true Democrat by ending the use of caretaker committee chairmen in the State and making sure that democratic elected Local Government Chairmen and councilors are elected in Kaduna State come 12th April, 2018.


“We also commend  Alh. Salisu Adamu Mohammed the CEO Triple A Homes & Mortgage Consultancy Ltd for his relentless efforts in seeing that all issues of state interest is given urgent attention and cared for. You are indeed a true Democrat and a Ambassador of Change.


“Finally, we conclude by saying that all the participating political parties and candidate should display maturity and wear the garment of sportsmanship during and after the election. They should all note that in every context there must always be a winner and a loser,” they said.
