The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) team have emerged champions of the maiden edition of the National Open Handball Tournament which ended at the weekend in Kaduna.
They beat hard fighting opponents Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) 16-14 to lift the trophy at stake.
The game was awarded to NSCDC after a protest from FRSC, who were against a penalty awarded, disrupted completion of the game.
In the female category, unlucky FRSC were also beaten to the trophy by Okorocha babes; Imo Grasshoppers after a keenly contested match ended 23-24.
The full time scores was 19-19, but Grasshoppers scored all five spot shoots, while FRSC lost one which was saved by the Grasshoppers’ goalkeeper.
In an interview with newsmen after the game, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Rochas Okorocha on Northern Affairs, Honourable Faisal Lawal said that they were not surprised by the victory. “We are happy about the win but not surprised because this is what we expected,” he said. “Imo State is well equipped and blessed with talented sportsmen and women. This is just the beginning, we are expecting to see them emerge champions of Africa,” he added.
