The Catholic Diocese of Zaria, Christ the King Cathedral has celebrated its 100 years of existence.
Speaking at the Centenary celebration, the Catholic Bishop of Zaria, Most Rev. George Jonathan Dodo said, Christ The King Sabon Gari, Zaria witnessed its first mass around 1917 then it was an out station of Asaba, when the priest visited Zaria on horse back bicycle and later by train.
He said, the first mass was said in the house of one George Anthony at Lagos Street and later the Church relocated to its present site at Yoruba Street in 1932.
According to him, there were three masses on Sunday with over 3,000 members in attendance with over 1,000 communicants, even though majority of the parishioners are non-indigenes.
Most Rev. Dodo said, the first standard Catholic Church was built and dedicated to Christ the King (CKC) blessed and opened on 7th June 1931 by Fr. John McCarthy.
While lamenting that in 2012 the Cathedral experienced a bomb blast that had several young men killed and some part of the church destroyed, but it was only repaired not rebuilt.
In his lecturer at the centenary celebration, the guest speaker, Mr. Joseph Nashakyaa, sadly said, it is apparent that Nigeria no longer cares about the past nor the future, which is why history as a subject is deleted from the school curriculum and the crafting of development plans that span four or five years has been abandoned.
Mr. Nashakyaa identified that Nigeria’s leaders now only focus on annual financial plans and debate on budgets for months as well as give approval to it halfway into a given year while at the end of the year without anybody knowing when and how the budgets were implemented.
During the celebration, the Most Rev. Fr. George Jonathan Dodo, the Catholic Bishop of Zaria commissioned the Cathedral’s Ultra Modern Hall.
Also speaking, the Cathedral Administrator Very Rev. Fr. Samuel Atine Ameh said that the time has come with a lot of excitement that God in his infinite mercy allowed then to see their place clock 100 years.
He wished all the worshipers and those that joined them in celebrating that milestone God should grant their heart desires through Christ Jesus.
