A middle age woman accused of child theft by the police in Lagos has claimed she kidnapped the two year old girl because she resembles her missing 20 year old daughter.
The suspect, Mary Vera Henry, paraded at the command headquarter Wednesday evening, was alleged to have kidnapped a two year old girl Mariam Jubril and Mukaila Ya’u, aged 10 years.
Commissioner of Police. Lagos Command Edgal Imohimi while parading the suspect said she committed the crime at about 10.30am on Wednesday along Herbert Macaulay Way Yaba.
He informed that the woman was cited with the two children by the DPO of Sabo Division CSP. Mary Ubangha and decided to trail her due to the suspect’s worried countenance.
Having noticed that she was under surveillance, the suspect, according to Edgal diverted into Saint Dominic Catholic Church,Yaba.
“The DPO followed her up and warned the church security men to keep an eye on the woman and never allowed her exit the church without police ascertaining their identities and mission to the church.
The security men obliged and brought the woman and the children before the DPO. During interrogation, the woman gave her name as Mary Vera Henry of No. 6 Akanni street Somolu. It was discovered that she was not the biological mother of the children who are from different parents. She claimed that she lost her 20 year old daughter whom diviners told her had been reduced in size and stature to a 2-year-old child and that the 2-year-old child looked exactly as her missing 20-year-old daughter”. Edgal disclosed.
The police boss added that the suspect was immediately arrested and taken to the station for further investigation, adding that the biological parents of the children surfaced and gave their names.
Further, he said, ” Mukaila Amidu, father of the 10-year-old boy told the police that he sent the son on errand and as he was going, the 2-year-old accompanied him unknown to her parent. However, along the road, the suspect lured the children away from their course to unknown destination”.
Edgal also informed that investigation into the case is ongoing and effort is on to arrest the fleeing brother of the suspect believed to be a co-conspirator of the crime.
In her defense, the suspect claimed that her daughter was kidnapped by one Chittan Oji, adding that the police were aware of it.
