The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) Wednesday tasked President Muhammadu Buhari to tell Nigerians the amount so far recovered from those that looted the national treasury and what the money would be used for.
The group in a protest letter to President Buhari through Governor Abiola Ajimobi submitted in Ibadan by its National Vice President, Comrade Idris Saka declared that Nigerians deserved the right to be regularly briefed on the recovered loots.
CDHR in the letter stated that this became necessary if the President Buhari administration is really determined to prove to Nigerians his openess and transparency.
“We are calling on the government to invest the recovered money into courses that can help the country. Our resources can sustain free education across board. We still wonder why Nigerians are still suffering for what they should be enjoying,” it said.
Specifically, the human right group advised the government to channel the recovered funds to projects that can impact positively on the populace within the shortest of time.
The group in the letter also asked the President to spread the anti-corruption fight across all the various sectors; ministries, departments and agencies as against the one sided notion perceived by Nigerians, adding that Nigeria’s resources “is enough to cater for the people if only it is put to good use”.
On the change the present government promised Nigerians during the campaign, CDHR stressed,”we want positive change like the President promised during his campaign” adding,“we appreciate the President on the fight against insurgents but the menace of the Fulani herdsmen must also be addressed”
Oyo State Deputy Governor, Otunba Moses Adeyemo, who received the letter on behalf of the governor said “corruption is a national problem that deserves national attention” and that President Buhari has shown his zero tolerance for corruption and willingness to restore discipline to the Nigerian culture.
While assuring that the letter will be delivered by him to Governor Ajimobi who would subsequently transmit it to the President, Otunba Adeyemo commended CDHR’s fighting spirit against corruption.
He lamented that despite the effort of the president in fighting corruption and bringing corrupt public officials to book, some people are still condemning and opposing government efforts, saying,”corruption entails so many things. If only Nigerians had been this proactive in the fight against corruption, maybe the situation of the country wouldn’t have been this worse
“I challenge all Nigerians to open their eyes and help government win this fight in the interest of the nation as a whole”
Speaking, Oyo state Chairman of CDHR Comrade Lawal Abdulkareem, declared that the rally “is to show that the NGO is against corruption. He identified unstable power as the bane of the nation’s economic downturn saying “without constant supply of electricity, a country cannot work”
