TWO people were
reportedly killed in an early morning explosion close to the popular Kantin Kwari textiles market in Kano yesterday which threw traders into panic as people scampered for safety just as there was no casualty.
The explosion which occurred about 8:30 in the morning around the Muhammadu Abdullahi Wase and IBB Junction close to the market reportedly injured a policeman, FRSC personnel and a staff of the state’s road and traffic control agency popularly known as KAROTA.
The explosion did not, however, affect any building inside the market as an eyewitness said the explosive might have been planted late in the night.
After the earlier frenzy by people around the area, normalcy had however returned to the ancient city as the incident occurred when people were coming out for the day’s business.
It was learnt that many people only came to know about the explosion after arriving at the scene as news about it did not circulate across the city in good time.
It would be recalled that Kano has not recorded explosions for months since the spate of bombings that were common place in the city after the January 20, 2012 when series of bomb blasts killed many people and destroyed several police formations.
Meanwhile, life has gone back to normal after the explosion as traders in the market opened their stalls and continued with their businesses while motorists continued plying roads.
Efforts to contact the police spokesman in the state proved abortive as he refused to pick reporters’ calls.
However, spokesman of the JTF in Kano, Captain Ikediche confirmed the incident saying that investigation into the incident had commenced.
