Presiding Bishop of the Redeemed Evangelical Mission, Bishop Mike Okonkwo has charged players who will participate in this year’s annual Bishop Mike Okonkwo Football competition to be disciplined as that is the only way they can achieve success.
He gave the advise during the football Sunday organised for all the participating teams.
According to him, the championship which produced the likes of Obafemi Martins noted that the competition has come to stay as it has impacted positively on the lives of many talented youths.
“I’m happy that the championship which commenced 16 years ago has produced many talented players like Obafemi Martins and it is only through discipline that you can become like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Rinaldo”, he stated.
President General of Nigeria Football Supporters Club, Dr.Rafiu Ladipo while commending Bishop Okonkwo for sustaining the championship for the past 16 years noted charged similar religious bodies to emulate him, even as he announced that the Supporters Club will partner with TREM to ensure a successful outing of the Super Eagles at the Russia 2018 World Cup.
Chairman of the Local Organising Committee of the tournament, Deacon Malachy Ndubuzor noted that this year’s edition is unique as it will have female teams participating in the championship since inception.
About 72 clubs made up of 64 male and 8 female teams will take part in the tournament which will kick off on May 5, 2018 at the practise pitch of the National Institute For Sports ( NIS), Lagos.
