Bauchi sets up flood victims’ relief c’ttee

A thirteen member committee charged with the responsibility of addressing the problems of flood disaster victims in Bauchi state has been set up by the state government.
Inaugurating the committee yesterday in Bauchi, Governor Isa Yuguda said the committee is to among other things, provide relief assistance to flood disaster victims in the state to enable them benefit from government’s gesture,
Yuguda explained that the federal government recently provided monetary relief assistance worth N400 million to the flood victims in the state, as it also last week donated relief materials to the victims to ameliorate their sufferings.
The Governor said however that the state recorded estimated cost of damage resulting from this year’s flood amounting to N9.6 billion relating to the washed away 32, 000 farmlands and destroyed houses, other properties regardless to loss of lives.
He stated that so far no single person has donated a single kobo to show sign of sympathy for the victims, describing flooding as tragedy, and therefore urged the committee to ensure hard work and honesty in the discharge of its responsibilities.
According to the governor, the committee’s terms of reference include calculate cost of damage, amount to be given to each of the victims and submit to the government. It is also to advise where necessary.
The committee has been given 12 weeks of which to submits its report to government for further consideration
Responding, the chairman of the flood relief committee, Ambassador Alhaji Adamu Aliyu assured that they will intensify efforts to complete the assignment within the stipulated period given them.
He said the committee will also work towards facilitating the the construction of Kafin Zaki Dam in the state so as to curtail recurrence of the flood menace from neighbouring states.
Aliyu explained that the construction of the Kafin Zaki dam become necessary as it would facilitate the sustainability of the well-being of the people of Bauchi state,
Other members of the committee include Alhaji sa’idu Ibrahim Jahun, Alhaji Aliyu Mukthar, representatives of the SSG’s Office, and Commissioner of finance.
