People in the Legal profession have been counseled to always arrive at a just and fair decision at the end of adjudication and not necessarily become victorious leaving their conscience hunting them.
Chairman of the Bauchi State branch of the Nigerian Bar association (NBA), Naseer Muhammed Jumba who gave the advice said legal practioners should strive to for justice from whichever angle or direction they are coming from.
Accordingly, Jumba said, consequences of their actions will be accounted for either here on earth or in the World beyond before the ultimate Judge who had promised to give to every soul what it truly deserves.
The Bauchi NBA chairman was speaking while welcoming legal luminaries to an Annual Law Week organized by the state branch of the Bar with the theme “How Well Have We Been Serving in the Temple of Justice” held Thursday at Zaranda Hotel, Bauchi.
He expressed dismay that the virtue of honesty upon which the legal profession was built is fast deserting the practioners with many of them careless about the dignity of the Bar and the Legal profession.
Jumba also observed that nonchalant attitude to cases in courts and at times frustrating justice by unnecessary applications for adjournments and taking ill heath excuses or bereavement and sometimes resort to frivolous petitions not to mention shabby dressing among many acts inimical to good legal practice.
“We have also abandoned the culture of research and reading in spite the fact that legal profession is now more complex and competitive. We are lagging behind in the challenges brought by modern technologies”, he said.
Earlier while declaring the week opened, Bauchi state Chief Judge, Justice Rabi Umar described the week’s theme as significant and suitable as it aimed at looking inward and assessing one’s self with a view to making amends where necessary and improve where lapses are discovered.
She noted that events of such nature and other intellectual gatherings to cross fertilize ideas and knowledge always stimulate intellect, squeeze out the zeal for attaining excellence, improve productivity and enhance adherence to code of conduct and professional ethics.
The Chief Judge said the week is coming at a time when the Executive Arm of Government is giving all necessary attention to the Judiciary in terms of provision of working materials and awards of contracts for building new courts and offices, accommodation and renovation and upgrading of existing structures.
“The Judiciary under watch will strive to uplift standard and always maintain same to be in line with the current realities and challenges and adherence strictly to the code of conduct and professional ethics”, she said.
Justice Rabi Umar assured that her leadership will not tolerate indolence, corruption or any act that is inimical to the smooth running of the administration of justice in line with the international best practice.
The week was rounded up with a dinner where merit awards and certificates were presented to deserving legal luminaries, as well as the bestowment of life chairman of the Bauchi NBA past chairmen forum on Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar.
